Rules for thank you letters.

Every thank you note is an opportunity to sell your qualifications and to leave a fresh impression in the mind of the reader. At the minimum, a thank you letter can leave one last impression before a final decision is made.
  • Be brief and to the point.
  • Repeat your interest in the position and/or company.
  • Include an item of interest from your conversation.
  • Repeat your qualifications and abilities.
  • Always send your formal letter or handwritten note (depending on personal style or situation) to a person by name.
  • If you have had multiple interviews at one company, thank each person, but be sure to vary the content.
  • Make it a point to tell people when and how they can expect to hear from you in the future.
  • Handwritten notes can have a powerful impact, unless you have poor penmanship and a typed letter is more effective.
