Gain insight on how to better position yourself.
An informational interview is one of the most valuable sources of career insights and networking. It also is a great way to ensure you'll excel in a formal job interview as well.
When you are calling for an informational interview, make it clear that you are asking for a limited amount of time in which to explore answers to some of your questions about the company or industry.
Tips on conducting a successful information interview include:
- Target companies and research employers before contacting them
- Locate contacts by asking classmates, professors, friends, family and alumni
- Ask for 20 minutes of your contact's time, and stick to it
- Get to your points quickly
- Be a good listener—follow the 50/50 rule
- Ask if the person can refer you to other people in the industry
- Thank the person with a follow-up letter soon after the interview
TIP: Things to discuss in an informational interview:
